DEMOGRAPHICS & COMMUNITY

Dominican Community Center NYC serves a largely Latin Community stretching from Manhattan Valley to the Upper West Side area.  The area is home to many working class, and lower income class residents.   Similar to the immigrants from Ellis Island so long ago, they also are looking for a better life and opportunity.  Of course, barriers do exist; which is why we exist.
In 1995, the organization began to notice the pressing need to get more involved in the political sphere, therefore, we began approaching the issues of our people in a empowering manner, by fulfilling their dreams of moving forward.  Since the citizenship drive had achieved such great success the next step towards gaining equality for Latino immigrants was to get them involved in the political process by registering them to vote.
Dominican Community Center NYC Inc. had not as of yet realized the weight this phenomenon carried, but the most recent New York State primary election on the Upper West Side has shown that Latinos registered to vote dramatically increased, and that they are a force to be reckoned with.
Dominican Community Center NYC Inc., is a not-for-profit organization supporting low-income and working class individuals, typically Latino immigrants, in assimilating to life in the United States, specifically New York City.  The organization offers support programs in the areas of Citizenship classes, English as a second Language in partnership with Columbia University, and referrals for a wide range of services.
